There is One Gospel

What This Song Teaches Us About God

The gospel is not about what we do but about what Jesus has done. He obeyed perfectly on our behalf, bore the punishment our sin deserved, and rose so that we could have real, lasting hope beyond death. This is called “substitution” — Jesus standing in our place — and it is the engine that drives everything Christians believe. When we understand this, it transforms how we see both our failures (already forgiven) and our future (already secured).

The song carries a note of confidence: there is one gospel, and it is enough. The cross is not a starting point that gets upgraded — it is the finished work of a sufficient Savior. “It is finished” were the actual words Jesus spoke before He died, and this song echoes that completeness.

Scripture Connections

  • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 — Paul defines the gospel plainly: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose on the third day, in accordance with the Scriptures — this is the core message the church has always proclaimed.
  • Romans 5:8 — God demonstrates His love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us — the gospel is not a reward for the good, but a rescue for the broken.
  • Galatians 1:6-7 — There is no other gospel; anything that claims to be good news but adds to or changes Christ’s finished work is not the real thing.
