What This Song Teaches Us About God

The God who hears His people’s cries has not forgotten them. He collects every tear (Ps. 56:8) and has covenanted to wipe them all away. So Scripture commands us to rejoice. This obedience does not require pretending pain isn’t real. “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Phil. 4:4) is faith resting in the One who reigns over every circumstance.

The empty tomb is the ground of that joy. Because Christ truly rose, every redemptive promise is secure: our adoption as sons, our union with the risen Christ, our own bodily resurrection. As He rose, so will we. The Christian life carries sorrow and an unshakable, blood-bought hope at the same time. We rejoice through suffering because the Risen Christ has accomplished our redemption and will return to wipe every tear from our eyes.

Scripture Connections

  • Philippians 4:4-7 — “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” Paul writes from prison; his command rests on the nearness and sufficiency of the Lord, not on his situation.
  • 1 Peter 1:3-9 — Born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ; rejoicing in trials that prove faith more precious than gold.
  • Revelation 21:3-4 — God Himself will dwell with His people and wipe away every tear; death and mourning and crying will be no more.
