Jesus Loves Me

Anna Bartlett Warner, 1860

What This Song Teaches Us About God

The song declares one truth plainly: Jesus Christ genuinely and personally loves you. Not humanity in some vague, distant sense — you. “This I know, for the Bible tells me so” grounds that love in revelation, not in feelings or favorable circumstances. Our confidence in God’s love does not rise and fall with how life is going. It rests on what God has said about Himself.

The line “they are weak but He is strong” is the gospel in miniature. We come to Jesus not with strength or impressive credentials, but as people who need Him. Jesus does not love us because we are good. He loves us as we are, and that love is what changes us.

Scripture Connections

  • John 3:16 — “God so loved the world” is the foundation under everything this song affirms about Jesus’s love being real and given freely.
  • Romans 5:8 — God demonstrated His love for us while we were still sinners, which is the same heart the song captures when it says we are weak and He is strong.
  • 1 John 4:19 — We love because He first loved us; the song is a response to a love that began with God, not with us.
  • Psalm 139:13-16 - “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb” God does not just know us, he has always known us, even when we were still in the womb
