I Want to Know You (City Alight)

What This Song Teaches Us About God

Christianity is not primarily about following rules or checking religious boxes. It is about knowing a Person — the living God who made us, loves us, and has gone to extraordinary lengths to bring us into relationship with Himself. This song expresses that longing directly. It echoes Paul, who after years of following Jesus still pressed forward in pursuit of knowing Christ more deeply.

Knowing God is not passive. It is something we pursue — and we can pursue it because God has already moved toward us first. He has revealed Himself in Jesus, given us the Scriptures, and given us His Spirit to help us understand and experience Him. The desire to know God more is itself a gift from God. And that pursuit does not end: God is far greater than we can fully comprehend. Every season of life, every hard circumstance, every time we open the Bible — these are all opportunities to know Him more.

  • John 17:3 — Jesus defines eternal life as knowing the one true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent — relationship, not just information or rule-following.
  • Jeremiah 9:23–24 — God says the thing worth boasting about is not strength or wisdom or wealth, but knowing and understanding Him — He places the highest value on being known by His people.
