How Great is the Greatness of God

How Great is the Greatness of God

What This Song Teaches Us About God

“How great is the greatness of God?” is a question meant to stretch our thoughts beyond what we can measure. The song is not asking us to calculate God’s greatness, as though He could be weighed or counted. It is teaching us to confess what Scripture says plainly: His greatness is beyond searching out.

That greatness is not abstract. God is great in who He is and in what He has done — in creation, in redemption, and in His rule over all things. The point is not merely that God is impressive, but that He is worthy of trust, worship, and obedience. We will never reach the edge of His wisdom, power, holiness, mercy, or love.

Scripture Connections

  • Psalm 145:3 — “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.” This is the clearest biblical summary of the song’s central question.
  • Isaiah 40:28 — “His understanding is unsearchable.” God’s greatness includes the fact that His wisdom and ways are beyond human comprehension.
  • Ephesians 3:18–19 — Paul prays that believers would grasp “the breadth and length and height and depth” of Christ’s love. The song aims at a similar sense of awe at how vast God is.
