His Mercy is More

What This Song Teaches Us About God

This song answers one of the fears many people carry into church: “Have I done too much? Gone too far? Is there a point where God’s patience with me runs out?” The answer is no. God’s mercy is not measured out in careful portions; it is more than our sin, more than our worst moments. The pattern revealed in Scripture is consistent: the prodigal son came home expecting to be a servant and was embraced as a son. Peter denied Jesus three times and was not only forgiven but restored to leadership. These are not exceptions; they are examples of how God works.

God is not reluctantly merciful. He does not forgive us while holding a grudge. His mercy is “steadfast” — it does not waver based on our behavior but is rooted in who He is.

Scripture Connections

  • Lamentations 3:22-23 — The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases and His mercies never come to an end — they are new every morning, which is the foundation of the song’s confident claim.
  • Luke 15:11-24 — The parable of the prodigal son, where the father runs to meet his returning child — one of Scripture’s clearest pictures of God’s character toward those who return to Him.
  • Micah 7:18 — “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.” God does not merely tolerate mercy — He delights in it.
