I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life

Series: I Am • Pastor Orrin

Summary

Preached on Resurrection Sunday as part of the ‘I Am’ series through John’s Gospel, this sermon explores Jesus’ declaration in John 14:1-7 that He is the way, the truth, and the life. Set in the Upper Room on the eve of the cross, Jesus comforts His troubled disciples not with promises of an easier road but by revealing Himself as the one who prepares a place, secures the believer’s future, and provides the only access to the Father. The resurrection validates every promise Christ made, transforming anxiety into assurance and giving believers both present comfort and future hope.

Key Points from the Sermon

  • Troubled hearts need a trustworthy Savior — Christ’s remedy for anxiety is faith in His person, not confidence in ourselves (John 14:1)
  • Christ secures the believer’s future with the Father — He has entered a covenant promise to prepare a place and return for His people (John 14:2-3)
  • Christ Himself is the only way to the Father — salvation is personal and exclusive, found in no one else and certainly not in ourselves (John 14:6)
  • The resurrection validates every promise — the empty tomb is God’s stamp of acceptance that Christ’s payment for sin has been received in full (1 Corinthians 15:12-20)
  • The exclusivity of the gospel is also its invitation — one cannot complain the gate is narrow who stands amazed that the gate is open (John 14:6; Romans 10:9)
  • Believers are called to live now in light of their coming home — holiness, hope, and mission all flow from a secure future (1 John 3:2-3)

Scripture Readings

John 14:1-7 - The primary passage: Jesus comforts His disciples in the Upper Room on the eve of the cross by revealing Himself as the way, truth, and life

1 Corinthians 15:12-26 - Paul’s essential teaching on why the resurrection matters — if Christ is not raised, faith is futile and we are still in our sins

1 John 3:2-3 - The hope of Christ’s return motivates present-day holiness and readiness among believers

Discussion Questions

Read John 14:1-7

  1. What specific commands and promises does Jesus give in these verses? List as many as you can find. What is the situation the disciples are facing when Jesus speaks these words?

Look again at John 14:1

  1. Jesus says ‘Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.’ How is this different from simply saying ‘Don’t worry’?

Read 1 Corinthians 15:17-20

  1. Paul says if Christ has not been raised, ‘your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.’ How does the resurrection serve as proof that God accepted Christ’s payment for sin? Why can’t we have Christianity without the empty tomb?

  2. Jesus says ‘No one comes to the Father except through me’ (John 14:6). Why do you think this claim is so offensive to our culture? How is the exclusivity of this statement actually an expression of love and an invitation rather than merely a restriction?

  3. The sermon noted that ‘our confidence is not in our faith but in our Savior.’ When have you experienced a season of doubt or wavering faith? How does it change things to know that your security rests in Christ’s finished work rather than in the strength of your own belief?

  4. The sermon challenged us that if we really believe Jesus is the only way, we will share that truth with others. Who in your life needs to hear the gospel? What is one practical step you can take this week to lovingly point them to Christ?

Application

This Week’s Challenge: This week, identify one person in your life who does not know Christ and commit to two things: (1) pray for them by name every day this week, and (2) look for or create one opportunity to share the hope you have in the risen Jesus.

Prayer Focus: Pray that God will increase your confidence in the risen Christ so that your troubled heart finds rest in His promises. Pray for boldness to share the hope of the gospel with those around you who need to hear it.

Memory Verse

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” — John 14:6
